Tora Tora is a hard rock band formed in Memphis, TN in 1985. “Tora” means “tiger” in Japanese (not “bird”, which is “tori” in Japanese). The name is a play on the code name for attack used by the Japanese Imperial Navy during their attack on Pearl Harbor, “Tora, Tora, Tora”. The actual origin of the bandname was more likely a reference to the song of the same name recorded by Van Halen on their 1980 release Women and Children First.
Tora Tora started out as a local garage band then eventually got studio time when they won a local Battle of the Bands contest. Following this, the band recorded To Rock To Roll as an independent EP. After its release the songs “Phantom Rider” and “Love’s A ~censored~” received extensive airplay on local radio station Rock 98. After signing with A&M Records, they recorded their debut album Surprise! Attack in 1989. This album peaked on Billboard’s Top 200 at #47. The single “Dancing With A Gypsy” was on the soundtrack for the film Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure later that year.
In 1992, their second album, Wild America, was released. It only achieved #134 on the Billboard charts and it did not sell as well, but, it was a more mature step at songwriting.
A third album, Revolution Day, was recorded in 1994, but it was never released due to label restructuring. After missing the due date, the band folded.
Recently, in 2008, all four original band members have reunited to do several performances. One was a sold out performance at Newbie’s, a local club in Memphis, TN to celebrate their 20th anniversary of receiving their record deal. After the show, a record was sold to fans which included songs from their first two albums and material slated for their unreleased “Revolution Day” album. The album was titled The Warehouse… 20 Years Later. The second occurred during Rocklahoma 2008. The band is scheduled to play another reunion show at The New Daisy Theatre on March 7, 2009, in Memphis.
At the end of 2009 Tora Tora signed with the Nashville, Tennessee based FNA Records and released 3 albums. “Before & After”, “Bombs Away: The Unreleased Surprise Attack Recordings”, and “Miss B. Haven’: The Unreleased Wild America Recordings”.
Tora Tora already have shows booked for 2010.

The Ultimate Experience is a 1993 compilation album of songs by songwriter and guitarist Jimi Hendrix. It features 20 of his greatest hits, most recorded with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and live renditions of “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Wild Thing”. It was released with MCA Records. The track listing was compiled from a poll citing his most popular recordings for the European market. All songs were recorded between October 23, 1966 and July 23, 1970.

In Romania, the most famous and the most gifted musicians live in two villages. In Clejani, just south-west of Bucharest, the violinists, cymbalists, double bass players and other accordion players notably formed the extraordinary Taraf de Haidouks. In Zece Prajini, north-east of the capital in Moldavia, you can find the greatest density of wind players per square meter, including the brass players of the famous Fanfare Ciocarlia. It is in these two villages, lost in the dust, the mud or the ice, according to the season, that you find the crème de la crème, the instrumentalists who are half-genius, half-rascal, capable of stirring up a wedding party with a single solo launched at supersonic speed.Knowing this, how do you find THE great Gypsy group, a sort of Balkan equivalent of the Memphis Horns with the rhythm section from Muscle Shoals, these two being the gold standard of soul music, combining power and finesse, groove and virtuosity? It’s easy, just bring together the musicians from Clejani and of Zece Prajini! The story of Mahala Rai Banda begins at the end of the nineties with Aurel Ionita forming the group Rom Bengale in Bucharest. Their success had hardly begun – when this ensemble of young musicians was plagued and divided by addiction problems. Aurel then created the initial line-up of the Mahala Rai Banda – a name inspired by the Gypsy suburbs of the big Romanian cities – which released a CD on Crammed Discs in 2004.Now the band is back with its mix of Romanian musical traditions, oriental pop, rumba Catalan, reggae and manele, the Roma pop with ambigious commercial success. Keeping the spirit of an orchestra playing exclusively live, Mahala Rai Banda, with the tremendous “Ghetto Blasters”, has released a disc where the pure pleasure of playing and partying overflows.
