Daft Punk – Discovery (2001) @320kbps

Daft Punk – Discovery (2001) @320kbps

Amazon.com’s Best of 2001
The French twosome behind Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo, get away with an awful lot. They go around impersonating aliens and robots in their interviews, they put records out only once every three years, and they make music that evokes a million other artists–while not really sounding like any of them. The keyboard noodlings of Jean-Michel Jarre are in there somewhere, along with the otherworldly imagery and giant hooks of ’70s rock icons like Boston or even Electric Light Orchestra. There are dashes of 1999-era Prince and oodles of new wave and disco cheese, from Harold Faltermeyer and Gary Numan to the Bee Gees, all set off with efficient house beats. So how have they managed to position themselves as electronic music’s next great crossover artists? On Discovery, the follow-up to the 1998 worldwide smash Homework, the answer is obvious: they have no shame, and they know how to make us dance.
Starting off with the irresistibly hummable “One More Time,” the record blows through a head-spinning array of styles and samples, creating a pop-culture stew of funky loops and dance-floor anthems. “Aerodynamic” eschews breakbeats for an Yngwie Malmsteen-ish guitar interlude that somehow ends up meshing in a crazy blend of stomping bass lines and hyped-up harmonics. “Digital Love” starts off silly and gets sillier, but the monosyllabic lyrics lull the senses just right, allowing the song’s summery groove to grab hold with authority. “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” is a resounding standout amidst the retro/Vocoder deluge that transpired after Cher’s Believe turned the kitchy disco device into a worldwide pop music trend, spinning a clever groove around an ever-escalating string of computerized seduction. Everywhere on the record, gigantic beats are dropped with pinpoint precision, giving songs a momentum that transforms repetitive melodies into sudden revelations. The record’s only misstep, the aptly named “Short Circuit” utilizes a keyboard riff that is nails-on-a-chalkboard awful, but it can’t keep this from being one of the best records of 2001. –Matthew Cooke

The history of rock music contains a handful of bands that stand out as being completely vital to the genre’s progression. Without question, Queen are one of those bands. ‘Absolute Greatest’ is a collection of the group’s biggest hits; from the infectious rally cry of ‘We Will Rock You’ to the groundbreaking, multi-layered operatic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. The late Freddie Mercury remains one of the most talented, charismatic frontmen of all time, while Brian May’s trademark guitar sound never tires.

My Review
Pearl Jam’s third birth comes with mixed emotion: whilst obviously being a musical success it also contains some of Eddie Vedder’s sad musings on Kurt Cobain’s death, most prominently in the haunting “Immortality”. Inside the cover art, a beautiful poem is included:

I waited all day.

you waited all day..

but you left before sunset..

and I just wanted to tell you

the moment was beautiful.

Just wanted to dance to bad music

drive bad cars..

watch bad TV..

should have stayed for the sunset…

if not for me.

External Reviews
It’s a sad paradox of these times that the artists who most successfully express our fears and anxieties are the ones who are least able to cope with the burdens of fame. Whether it’s Sinéad O’Connor, who masochistically invites humiliation with public displays of emotional nakedness, or Kurt Cobain, who finally just gave up, it’s sometimes tempting to say what Frank Sinatra once told George Michael – that is, “Stop complaining and enjoy the ride.” But then, Frank is not exactly the most sensitive guy himself.

No one regrets that he’s too famous now to be Ian MacKaye of Fugazi more than Eddie Vedder does. As it was for Cobain, it’s difficult for Vedder to adjust to the fact that the people who used to beat him up in school are now among his biggest fans. While Vitalogy is not the calculatedly anti-commercial album that In Utero was rumored to be (but really wasn’t) before it was released, the one designed to alienate all the fans Vedder doesn’t like, it is a wildly uneven and difficult record, sometimes maddening, sometimes ridiculous, often powerful.

“As privileged as a ~censored~” is how Vedder sums up his fame in “Immortality.” “Victims in demand for public show.” In “Corduroy,” success has left him disaffected and no longer in control of his destiny: “I’m already cut off like I feared/I’ll end up alone like I began,” he sings before concluding: “All the things that others want for me/Can’t buy what I want because it’s free.” Ironically nostalgic for the desperately troubled youth that inspired his best and most tormented songs, he sings on “Not for You”: “All that’s sacred comes from youth/Naive and true with no power/Nothing to do/I still remember/Why don’t you?” Like Pete Townshend, whose Quadrophenia was the soundtrack of Vedder’s adolescence, Vedder seems afraid that while once he was the Punk, he’s now the Godfather.

Vedder is also more haunted by intimations of mortality than ever before – not exactly a new theme for him but a chilling one for a record whose title means “the study of life.” The album opens with a death-obsessed song called “Last Exit,” and its final track, “Stupid-mop,” concludes with a meditation on suicide. On “Immortality,” Vedder acknowledges, “Cannot stay long/Some die just too young.”

Vitalogy has a number of gripping songs that match the soaring anthems of Ten, the extended grooves of Vs. or the poetry of either record. The first three tracks are a promising start: “Last Exit,” “Not for You” and especially “Spin the Black Circle,” a revvedup thrash tribute to vinyl, rock harder than anything Pearl Jam have ever done. “Whipping” and “Corduroy” are also hard edged and catchy. “Better Man” is a haunting ballad about a woman trapped in a bad relationship; it recalls the character study “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” on Vs. As on “Daughter,” also from Vs., Vedder’s empathy for and identification with women throughout Vitalogy is remarkably affecting and unforced.

Interspersed among the stronger tracks, though, are throwaways and strange experiments that don’t always work. The demented polka “Bugs,” which features Vedder, backed by a discordant accordion, ranting paranoiacally about insects, makes an uncharacteristic stab at humor but ends up being more silly than funny. “Pry, To” is a one-minute doodle that consists of Vedder spelling out the word privacy over and over until we get the point already.

But the most bizarre cut on the record is the last one, “Stupidmop,” a seven-minute hommage to the Beatles’ “Revolution 9.” Consisting of tape loops of distressed voices over banshee guitar howls, the song begs the question, “Is anyone still listening out there?” It opens with a young girl repeating “My spanking, that’s the only thing I want so much.” “Why is that better than a hug?” a woman asks her. “Because you get closer to the person,” the girl replies. The cut closes with a dialogue that is even more disturbing than it might ordinarily be in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s death. A man asks a woman, “Do you ever think that you actually would kill yourself?” “Well, if I thought about it real deep, I believe I would,” she answers. They’re the last words on the album.

Bart Simpson once daydreamed that he was a rock star with a phony British accent, singing, “Me Fans Are Stupid Pigs.” Some may think Vedder has reached the point where he thinks his efforts are just Pearl Jam before swine; they’ll dismiss this record as swerving dangerously close to being contemptuous of his audience. But Vitalogy isn’t Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music, nor does it seem like a tossed-off interlude like Zooropa. It’s more a portrait of an artist in crisis, a man who hasn’t yet decided what direction to take next.

My Favorite Track(s):
Immortality

Van Halen – 5150 (1986)

Van Halen - 5150 (1986) (320 Kbps)

Quality: 320 Kbps

1.”Good Enough” – 4:04
2.”Why Can’t This Be Love” – 3:47
3.”Get Up” – 4:37
4.”Dreams” – 4:54
5.”Summer Nights” – 5:06
6.”Best of Both Worlds” – 4:48
7.”Love Walks In” – 5:11
8.”5150″ – 5:44
9.”Inside” – 5:02

5150 is the seventh album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1986. This was the first album recorded with new lead singer Sammy Hagar, who replaced David Lee Roth.

It was named after Eddie Van Halen’s home studio, 5150, which is a California police term for a mentally disturbed person (a reference to Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code). The 5150 name has been used several times by Van Halen. It is the name of Eddie Van Halen’s private studio, the name of a custom Frankenstein striped Kramer Pacer Special used by Eddie Van Halen throughout the 80s, and it is the model name of a signature guitar amplifier endorsed by Eddie for Peavey Electronics.

Before the album was released, Van Halen was having considerable difficulty finding a replacement for the popular Roth. The trio even considered a series of temporary singers to replace him. However, Edward met former Montrose singer Sammy Hagar while getting a mechanic to work on his Lamborghini. The pair hit it off and the new singer and band immediately began work on new songs. The album was notable for a number of love songs and ballads, which was not a feature of the straight-forward rock stylings of the Roth fronted era of the band. Many who had heard the previous incarnation of Van Halen called the new iteration “Van Hagar” either derisively or affectionately. Further increasing criticism was the loss of Ted Templeman, who left Van Halen after producing every previous Van Halen album to produce David Lee Roth’s solo LP debut, Eat ‘Em and Smile, although Templeman would return to produce the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album a few years later. Donn Landee took over producer duties after having served as an engineer on the previous albums. However, many noticed that the production on this album was markedly different from their earlier albums with Templeman. Eddie’s guitar, which previously sat high in the mix and frequently pushed to the left channel (to simulate a “live” sound”), now sat equal in the mix and its overall sound had changed. This may have been his doing, as he was not a fan of the “live mix” that Templeman created with the Roth band. To further introduce the new era for the band, a new Van Halen logo was introduced on the cover of the album. The new icon retained the VH of the original logo, but now it had curved “wings” instead of straight.

Despite the controversy associated with replacing a legendary frontman, the album itself was the first album by the band to hit #1 in sales. Although each prior Van Halen album had gone platinum, the band had not managed previously to top the album sales chart. The 1984 album certainly had the sales, and momentum to do so, but had the unfortunate timing of being released at a time when Michael Jackson’s Thriller album, the best selling album of all time, was at its commercial peak. The album was also Hagar’s first #1 album, as stated by Hagar on the “Live Without a Net” concert video.

A live video was created during the tour for this album, which was released as Van Halen – Live Without a Net, which is today available on DVD. The tour itself was a significant change from previous tours. Where Van Halen had previously had years of material to work with, even on tour supporting the first album, Sammy Hagar was uncomfortable performing a number of Van Halen’s Roth-penned hits. Therefore, almost all of the band’s back catalog was dropped from the setlists. Instead, the band’s live shows consisted almost the entire 5150 tracklist, a few Sammy Hagar solo hits (“I Can’t Drive 55″, and “There’s Only One Way to Rock”) and assorted covers (such as Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” and Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll”). The only Roth era hits commonly performed were “Jump” (the band’s lone #1 Billboard Hot 100 single), “Panama” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”, although “You Really Got Me”, originally by the Kinks and the bands first single in the Roth era, was also done. However, unlike Roth, Hagar was a technically proficient lead guitarist and this allowed Edward to display his talents on keyboard live while Sammy Hagar played the guitar parts, as seen in the “LWAN” video during “Why Can’t This Be Love” and “Love Walks In.”

The opening song “Good Enough” can be heard in the movie Spaceballs. Furthermore, this is only one of two Van Halen albums with a title track (the other being 1984 and not counting “The Best of Both Worlds” compilation). However, it should be noted that the titles of “Women and Children First” and “Fair Warning” are mentioned in songs from those albums, “Could This Be Magic?” and “Mean Street” respectively.

Augustus Pablo

Augustus Pablo - King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown
Horace Swaby (June 21, 1954 – May 18, 1999), better known as Augustus Pablo, was a Jamaican roots reggae and dub record producer and keyboardist, active from the 1970s onwards. He was perhaps the first person to use the melodica as a viable musical instrument. He was known for his devotion to the spiritual Rastafari movement.

He was born in St. Andrew, Jamaica and learned to play the organ in Kingston College School. It was at that point an unnamed girl lent him the melodica. Fascinated by the instrument, Pablo rarely put it down. He also met Herman Chin Loy, who after working at his cousin Leslie Kong’s Beverley’s record shop, had set up his own Aquarius store in Half Way Tree. Swaby recorded early tracks including “Higgi Higgi”, “East of the River Nile”, “Song of the East”, and “The Red Sea” between 1971 and 1973 for Chin-Loy’s Aquarius Records. The name Augustus Pablo had previously been used by the producer for many of the discs he produced featuring a keyboards player, and Swaby took the name for this recording.

“East of the River Nile”, a unique blend of East Asian and Jamaican sounds, became a moderate hit. Augustus Pablo popularized the use of the melodica (an instrument used primarily to teach children music in the Jamaican public schools) in reggae music. He soon joined Now Generation (Mikey Chung’s band) and played the keyboard with them while his friend, Clive, began his own career as a record producer. Pablo and Chin recorded “Java” (1972) together, as soon as Pablo quit Now Generation and Clive was able to get the studio time, the instrumental was a massive hit, and launched Pablo’s solo career. He recorded with Chin and various others, including Leonard Chin, his uncle, and Lee Perry. He scored another smash hit with “My Desire” (John Holt).

Pablo formed labels Hot Stuff, Message and Rockers (named after his brother’s soundsystem, Rockers), and released a steady stream of well-received instrumentals, mostly versions of older hits from Studio One. In spite of his success with Rockers, Pablo’s seminal 1974 album, This Is Augustus Pablo was recorded with Clive and Pat Chin. This was followed by a collaboration with the legendary reggae engineer King Tubby to great acclaim, releasing 1975′s Ital Dub.

In the later 1970s, Pablo produced a steady stream of hits, including the hit “Black Star Liner” (Fred Locks). He also worked with Dillinger, Norris Reid, I-Roy, Jacob Miller, Te -Track, The Immortals, Paul Blackman, Earl Sixteen, Roman Stewart, Lacksley Castell, The Heptones, Ricky Grant, Delroy Williams,Junior Delgado, Horace Andy and Freddy McKay. This period was eventually commemorated with critically acclaimed LP’s including King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown (1976) and Hugh Mundell’s classic Africa Must be Free by 1983. This was followed by East of the River Nile (1978, Original Rockers 1979 and Rockers Meets King Tubby in a Firehouse, another acclaimed hit album.

In the 1980s, Pablo’s career slowed significantly. He had begun to establish an American audience, and released Rising Sun in 1986 to good reviews and sales. Pablo also produced memorable hits, including “Ragamuffin Year” (Junior Delgado), “Humble Yourself” (Asher & Tremble) and “Far Far Away” (Ricky Grant). In addition, Pablo toured extensively throughout the world, making a memorable live album in Tokyo in 1987. That same year, Rockers Come East re-established his career, and he began to release a series of critically acclaimed though somewhat inaccessible albums in the 1990s, including Blowing With the Wind and also producing several, such as Night & Day (Dawn Penn) and Jah Made Them All (Yami Bolo).

Pablo died as a result of a collapsed lung on May 18, 1999. He had been suffering for some time from the nerve disorder Myasthenia gravis.

He has a daughter named Isis, and a son named Addis.
